The superpower of truly listening
In some situations, people don’t really want advice or solutions, all they crave is to simply feel heard.
Listening, and not just “listening” but truly listening, is a superpower. And I don’t mean just nodding with the occasional “hmm” and unnecessary interruptions mid-conversation. I’m talking about putting your full attention on them and reassuring them in that moment that they matter and their words are safe with you.
The most fascinating part? Science backs this up. When someone feels genuinely heard and understood, their brain releases oxytocin, the same “bonding hormone” that makes us feel connected and cared for. Their stress level drops, and their body literally calms down. And all you did was truly listen.
We often underestimate how powerful silence can be. You don’t always need to have the right advice or solution. Sometimes your quiet presence speaks louder than any advice or solution you could give.
Think about it: when was the last time you walked away from a conversation not because someone gave you the best advice or solution ever, but because you truly felt heard and understood? That warm, light feeling you carry afterwards? That’s the superpower of truly listening at work.
In a world where everyone wants to be heard, maybe we don’t need teleportation or invisibility (though, let’s be honest those would be pretty cool haha). Maybe the true superpower is being the one who truly listens.

I fully concur! I don’t want your advice or solution c i just need you to listen to what is happening inside my head, understand me, reassure me that I am being heard. Thank you so much yewande, this is really enlightening and an eye opener.
