The Heavy Weight of Suppression
Suppression is when you consciously push down your emotions instead of expressing them. And although it can help you maintain composure in the moment, suppressed emotions don’t disappear; they linger and sit quietly, waiting for the moment when you can no longer hold them in. They have a powerful way of taking a toll on your body and mind.
The truth is, emotional avoidance has a cost. When you suppress, it shapes how you think, behave, make decisions, and connect with others. Over time, you might start feeling detached from your own feelings, fatigued, irritable, tense, or an emptiness that can’t be explained. It is not because you’re weak, but rather your nervous system is attempting to release everything it’s been holding in.
When emotions are suppressed for a long time, they can perpetuate mental instability, leading to mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and chronic stress, building a negative bridge between you and your mental wellness.
Healing begins when you stop glorifying emotional silence and start giving your emotions a safe place to exist, even if that means journaling, talking to someone, or simply acknowledging and admitting exactly how you feel.
Suppression might seem like strength, but true strength lies in acknowledging what you feel without letting it consume you. Because the emotions you suppress are often the ones that need your attention the most.
