The Heavy Weight of Suppression

Image
Have you ever tried to outsmart your emotions, thinking ignoring them is strength? Most times, it’s not strength at all, it is suppression disguised as control. Suppression is when you consciously push down your emotions instead of expressing them. And although it can help you maintain composure in the moment, suppressed emotions don’t disappear; they linger and sit quietly, waiting for the moment when you can no longer hold them in. They have a powerful way of taking a toll on your body and mind.  The truth is, emotional avoidance has a cost. When you suppress, it shapes how you think, behave, make decisions, and connect with others. Over time, you might start feeling detached from your own feelings, fatigued, irritable, tense, or an emptiness that can’t be explained. It is not because you’re weak, but rather your nervous system is attempting to release everything it’s been holding in. When emotions are suppressed for a long time, they can perpetuate mental instability, leading to...

World Mental Health Day

Image
Every year, October 10 reminds us of something we should never forget—mental health matters to everyone. Mental health is essential; it is as fundamental as your physical health. It plays a significant role, influencing our emotions, behaviors, attitudes, and decisions, which shape every aspect of our lives. This year’s theme, “Access to Service: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” reminds us that emergencies do more than destroy buildings and homes.  They also disrupt emotions, minds, and communities. In times of crisis, mental health support becomes even more essential, yet often the least accessible. Access to mental health services is a universal human right. Let’s use today to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves: How can I take better care of my mind? How can I make it easier for someone else to feel seen and supported, especially when life feels overwhelming? Sending love to anyone who may be struggling or find today heavy, and to everyone doing their best, i...

Rest is not a luxury, it is a necessity

Image
We often convince ourselves that rest is something to be earned, and not mandatory. That mindset is exactly what keeps us stuck in a cycle of exhaustion. The truth is rest is not laziness; it is maintenance. It is how your nervous system finds balance again, how the body and mind recalibrate after effort, how your thoughts settle and your hormones rebalance. When you finally stop doing and just breathe, your body shifts from survival mode to recovery mode. Your heart rate slows, muscles loosen and your brain gets the chance to process emotions it’s been holding on to all this while. We often talk about self-care, but we forget that rest is the foundation of it. You can eat right, journal, or meditate, but without actual rest, your system never fully resets. You can’t pour real efficiency from an overworked and overstimulated mind. True rest isn’t just the absence of activity; it’s the presence of peace. Sometimes that means quiet, sometimes solitude and sometimes just sitting wit...

The superpower of truly listening

Image
In some situations, people don’t really want advice or solutions, all they crave is to simply feel heard.  Listening, and not just “listening” but truly listening, is a superpower. And I don’t mean just nodding with the occasional “hmm” and unnecessary interruptions mid-conversation. I’m talking about putting your full attention on them and reassuring them in that moment that they matter and their words are safe with you. The most fascinating part? Science backs this up. When someone feels genuinely heard and understood, their brain releases oxytocin, the same “bonding hormone” that makes us feel connected and cared for. Their stress level drops, and their body literally calms down. And all you did was truly listen. We often underestimate how powerful silence can be. You don’t always need to have the right advice or solution. Sometimes your quiet presence speaks louder than any advice or solution you could give. Think about it: when was the last time you walked away from a c...
