Therapy isn’t only for tough times

Most people think therapy is only for when life feels overwhelming but what if that’s not the only time it’s needed?

One of the biggest misconceptions about therapy is that it’s only meant for when one feels mentally overwhelmed. Yes, it may be true that the majority of people seek therapy during those moments, which is perfectly valid. But that isn’t the only reason therapy exists.

Okay, think about the way people go for routine physical health checkups even if they’re not sick, just to ensure their physical health is intact. The same applies for therapy. It can be used as a preventative approach, helping you maintain mental wellness and reduce the chances of bigger struggles down the road.

It is natural for therapy to cross your mind mostly when you’re struggling mentally, and honestly, that is fine. But that is not the only case where it can be sought.

Therapy can be used as a space for so many things that often don’t get enough attention, such as:

Self-discovery: helping you understand yourself on a deeper level.

Life transitions: navigating big changes in your life like relocation, graduation or career shifts.

Skill building: learning healthy coping strategies, communication skills, or emotional regulation.

There are so many things that can lead you to therapy. Therapy should not only be limited to the “bad” phases of life.

So maybe the best time to seek therapy isn’t only when things fall apart, but when you’re ready to take care of your mind, just like you would your body.
